Overlays

Overlays are useful during modernizations to coordinate the movement of the modernized and unmodernized elevators. Their cost has to be balanced by their benefits. For a group of four or fewer elevators it is doubtful that an overlay during modernization would help much. For a group of six or more elevators the overlay if likely worth the cost. For a five car group it is a toss-up.

Overlays installed to make elevators systems run better are not generally a good thing. Although they may eliminate some dispatching problems since they replace most of the dispatching relays, they often create other problems because of the complexity of the interface between the overlay and the existing controls. As well, once an overlay is installed there is little hope of any other company maintaining the elevators. And in many cases there is little hope of any company maintaining the elevators.

So we advise either a complete modernization or nothing. The overlay as a compromise intermediate step is not really effective.
