Another Elevator Mechanic Strike!?

A strike or lockout situation involving elevator and escalator mechanics in Ontario is possible as early as May 1st, 2019.

While we are unable to obtain good information about the status of any negotiations to renew the current Ontario union agreement (between IUEC and NEEA) we advise our clients to monitor the situation and make reasonable contingency plans. Many of us remember the long impacts of deferred maintenance from the last two month long Ontario strike in 2013.

Here are our recommendations for reasonable steps to take to attempt to minimize the impact of a potential strike or lockout situation:

1. Contact your service provider for a specific contingency plan for your building(s) in advance.

2. Defer any modernization starts until late May so that you are not left with a unit out of service.

3. Monitor and manage to have all CAT1 tasks and periodic maintenance current by the end of April.

KJA will keep you up to date with any information as we receive it on our website and LinkedIn page.
