The Ontario Auditor General issued a report on December 6, 2018 that is critical of the state of elevator safety inspections by the Ontario Technical Safety and Standards Authority (T.S.S.A.) and the oversight of the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services. While the Toronto Star article possibly overstates the safety concern it is another concerning report that continues to keep elevator safety and reliability in the public eye.
A private members bill titled the Elevator Reliability Act went through extensive study and resulted in a TSSA report in January 2018. Source: tssa availability study final report. The former provincial government introduced legislation intended to address some of the concerns in the report but the new provincial government seems reluctant to move the legislation forward in any fashion. We believe that much can be done to improve reliability but that the safety of elevators in Ontario is not a large concern as the oversight provided by the TSSA is extensive and risk based.
